Entertaining is in my genes. My great grandma was the one who taught me the importance of sharing time with family and friends over a meal. Her number one rule was to enjoy the time and never stress about the little details. So, when Pier 1 Imports asked me to host a block party for some friends, I couldn’t wait to share the details.
One of our favorite things since moving to Dallas has been to host fun, spur of the moment get-togethers for friends and family. We love to pull the barbecue grill in the front yard, set up a quick table in the driveway and some comfy chairs for our friends and neighbors to stop by and grab a bite to eat. Keep scrolling for my three tips for hosting a successful get-together.
SET THE SCENE
For me, hosting is all about getting friends and family together for great conversation and of course, lots of fun! My go-to is always to keep it casual. This allows your guests to really enjoy, sit back and relax. Pier 1 Imports is my go-to for all my summer entertaining decor needs. They have fun and festive designs, all at affordable prices! One of my favorite finds are these melamine plates that are great for outdoor entertaining! I ended up picking up three different colors, so I could mix and match them throughout the summer. They look nice, but are easy to clean and can’t break.
When it comes to creating a menu, I have two rules: Keep it simple and easy. No one likes a host that is slaving in the kitchen. My best tip is to prepare as much as possible the night before and then you can enjoy the party without spending any time in the kitchen. We love to barbecue (I mean, my husband is from Kansas City). One of my favorite menus for an easy block party:
Chips and a dip trio, this will always be a hit and will create a space for people to gather.
Main Course: Grilled chicken, burgers, and cauliflower steaks for our vegetarian friends. We can prep all of the meat the night before and throw it on the hot grill when everyone is hungry. Doesn’t this just remind you of summer.
Sides: I typically make an easy, fresh salad to brighten up the table to serve family style. We also throw some corn on the cob and some fresh veggies onto the top rack of the grill. My tip: set aside serving dishes, so they are ready to go when the food is warm.
CREATE A SIGNATURE DRINK
While we will always have a cooler full of beer and water, a signature drink adds a little festive flare. My personal favorite is a Paloma. I always fill up a few pitchers and add it to the serve-yourself bar cart. Add a darling ice bucket that your can refill and I guarantee it will be the talk of the party! Cute cups don’t hurt either. These blue margarita glasses are so fun and the best part is they are acrylic so no cleaning up broken glass!
With Memorial Day right around the corner, be sure to check out Pier 1 Imports for all your block party and outdoor entertaining needs.
