PRICKLY

With this gloomy, cold weather in full force in Kansas City I have been getting the winter blues and seriously missing Arizona.  Growing up in a place where 95% of the days are filled with sunshine and above normal temps, you get accustom (some call it spoiled) to eating outside, hiking, and wearing open toed shoes year round.  Moving to Kansas City was definitely an adjustment when it came to weather. I do absolutely love having all four seasons, even watching snow fall, but nothing compares to a warm March day in AZ. Since I moved, I try to make it home at least five times a year to visit family and friends, and I am certainly do for another trip.  But with lots of weddings and work events this year, it is definitely hard to make a spur of the moment trip happen.  So here I am, slightly homesick and needing a little AZ pick me up. I suppose these cacti will do for now and the thought of 85 degrees.

The Takeaway

I told you I would share I few things I learned during my time at ALT.  To be honest, I came into the conference with very little expectations and came out with a new outlook on how I am going to approach life and how to find inspiration in the unexpected. And this outlook did not necessarily come from take-aways during the panels but more from the personal relationships that I built over those few short days.  Maybe it was long chats with Jessica or listening to Jasmine Star preach her ways, but it really got me thinking- I need to focus on being ME.   Whether that is the good or the bad, it’s me in the whole.  (sorry if this is getting too deep), but it takes me to my next point.

I realized that I am the only one that is going to make things happen for myself.  Whether it be relationships, blogging, happiness, business….and the list goes on- I am going to be the one that makes it happen. That being said, I have a lot of exciting things up my sleeve and I am going to do everything in my power to make sure they happen.  I am so inspired right now and I want to stay that way- so hopefully all you lovely readers will help me continue on this journey. Your comments are what keep me going and make this feel “worth it” on days when I am not in the mood- so really I would love to hear from you.

FINDING YOUR STYLE

This week I have been totally procrastinating on figuring out my wardrobe for ALT.  Oh, I don’t know if I told you lovies, but I am going to Altitude Design Summit next week and I couldn’t be more excited/ nervous! I think it is the unexpected that frightens me the most. I mean hundreds of some of the most inspiring bloggers in one room for three days, celebrities, and hopefully meeting people that become quick and lifelong friends.  I have been blogging now for 2 years, and the one thing I wish I would have done from the beginning is reach out to those who inspire me the most. So now, 2 years later I am finally going to have the opportunity to meet them in person. I may freeze when I meet Jenny from Little Green Notebook or Emily Henderson, who is one of my style icons, or when I finally meet Mackenzie from Design Darling in person (instead of talks over email), and so many more of my favorite bloggers. My goal for the weekend is to be anything but shy, be myself, and soak in every bit of information that I could possibly imagine.

But back to my procrastination, I seriously have no clue what I am going to wear. My style for the most part is simple, classic and neutral (this is where I find myself scrambling for an idea for a party where color is required- insert stressful sigh here).  As I was browsing the internet for I found myself pinning every picture of Olivia Palermo I found as inspiration for the weekend… IF ONLY I HAD HER WARDROBE. Leather skinnies, silk blouses, and amazing coats, let’s just say I would die to walk in her closet for 10 minutes.

So I think I am going to stick with being true to my style, and not go find some poof for my hair or 7 inch wedges so I can stand out.  While I wish I sometimes had the ability to totally let go when it comes to style, I have realized that choosing classic pieces is not such a bad habit to have formed.

OUTLOOK

I was browsing on Design Sponge, which is probably the first blog I continuously started following about 4 years back. Grace did a fabulous, creative post of people’s New Years Resolutions and this one caught my eye

“to aid in the FLOURISHING of others”-  Dana Tanamachi

I, amongst others I am sure, get caught up in the daily grind and sometimes forget that I am not the only person on this earth.  I know this sounds bad and self absorbed, but my goal this year is to focus on helping others grow. Whether it be in a career, life, or just friendship. I am going to make a conscious effort to be present in all of the people’s lives I care about.

I would love to hear from ya’ll- did you make any goals or resolutions for the year? Workouts, eating healthy….LET’S HEAR ‘EM!

A Little Country

So did I mention I am looking for a new place to live?  This weekend Patrick and I went on a major house hunt and without much luck.  A couple good options fell through and a few that may still be in the works.  Well anyways, the entire weekend all I wanted to do was fill this “house that doesn’t exists” with beautiful furniture and accessories.  The one things we both agree on is a cowhide rug for the living room.  Probably this one from the new online store, Lulu and Georgia. Have I mentioned that I am kind of obsessed with everything.

Anywho, I have been pinning like crazy for room inspiration and I am particularly partial to this room by Miss Emily Henderson.  Since this will be the first time I am not living with girlies, I decided our place must have a little masculine touch, which means no more corals and powder blue walls.   I am thinking big American flag, antlers, cowhide rugs and big cozy couches.  Of course add some gold details and florals to give the space a few feminine touches.

Today’s News…Ikea

Exciting news for Kansas City… IKEA just released that they will be opening a new store in Merriam, KS.  I honestly do not know if I have ever been so excited about something so trivial.  It could have something to do with me starting to look at new places to live, and getting excited about buying furniture and decorating.  I am sad to leave our awesome apartment and the best roomate I have ever had, but house hunting is going to be fun and exciting.

Do any of you have any great IKEA hacks that you have worked on?  I would love to hear about them!

6 Things I Love

Two things that come to mind when I think about September; Football and Fashion.  A strange combination but two things I absolutely love.  Not only is Fashion’s Night Out this week but the first win by my good ‘ol Jayhawks started this week out right.  Today, Labor Day, was another reason why I love September.  What are your favorite things about this month?

A few of my favorite things:

1. The September Issues- Picked up a few at the airport this weekend, ready to dive in.

2. Mercedes Benz Fashion Week- Can’t wait for the street style, my favorite part.

3. Fashion’s Night Out- Heading to the Hall’s for a night of shopping and sweet treats!

4. The Plaza Art Fair- Best time of the year in Kansas City.

5. Oyster Season- Yes, Please.

6. College Football- Are you ready for some tailgating?
